Does libswscale work properly?  The log message for revision 1.68 of
ports/multimedia/ffmpeg/Makefile says

- Don't build ffmpeg with swscaler by default: VLC 0.8.6c does not
   support it; if you still need it, please define WITH_SWSCALER;

which suggests to me that there's a reason why it was disabled.
