Of course it was necessary, after the freeze it would have been too late for 
getting this into 5.3-Release (which is a PITA to upgrade to anyway, but 
without nice instructions how to maneuvre around the pitfalls). And people 
have been asking for it repeatedly on more than one list (and on IRC). 

Why the ports-freeze has to start in three days, given how huge the 
5.3-RELEASE ToDo list still is, is a better question IMHO.

The PITA thing is a matter of personal opinion I guess, I wrote the 
instructions in UPDATING so it would _not_ become a PITA to do the upgrade 
and so people would _not_ be dumbstruck by things acting a bit offbeat when 
they run them after the update the first few times.
