Ah!  I've been having programs randomly crash all the time at work on some 
-CURRENT machines, but only in ld-elf.so.1 in exactly one, 
initialization-time location: the memset() of the left-over memory after 
having mapped in the library and changed some of it to be reard-write.  I 
guess this might be related?
