Gabor sent a mail to doc@ with proposed changes and nobody objected in removing these parts. One of the other suggestions was to try to make one list and generate both the web pages and the article from that one. That might be a better solution, but the doc and the www tree should be able to build separately, so I think it would be complicated to implement. I think there are other overlapping parts, like &os; and the current release entities. Maybe it would make sense to separate them to a common part somehow and use it for the web and the doc? I see. Well... According to revision 1.1 [1] (by murray and nik): "Combine parts of Chapter 21 and Appendix D from the FreeBSD Handbook into a separate 'Contributors' article so that everything is in one place. This was done for various reasons : * This information is way out of scope for the Handbook. * When we talk about "Contributors" to FreeBSD or developed by "A large team of individuals" on the web site we can point the user to a complete document on our web page rather than two separate chapters in the Handbook. * We can create a plain-text 'CREDITS' file from this SGML and put it in /usr/share/misc or similar for all FreeBSD installs if that is desired." It was full of outdated and out of synch information, but there is always place for ideas for a better a documentation, I think. > And in a long term, maybe we should merge www and doc into a single > repository (like www/en -> doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/htdocs or so) because > of making reuse of information easier. I have no general problem with merging www and doc closer (might be done while considering moving to svn?) and fully requiring having both for build of either, but having e.g. www/en as a deep subdir of doc/ seems like a rather bad idea to me. The web site and and doc/ are rather differnet beast wrt. how you write content so I see no problem having it in seperate top level directories. > BTW, for teams/hats related information, what do you think about > adding files including who it is on per developer basis? Generally, I think it would be neat (and I looked a bit of doing it a few years ago), but I must say I'm not sure if doing it is really worth the trouble compared to just making sure we don't have duplication of the information. That said, if somebody does it I'm certainly not generally against it (considering my below point). For some parts of our current site I think some of the XSLT magic is a bit to magic and hard to understand, so I'm a but conserned going too much further in that direction... -- Simon L. And we can have a website.ent in share/sgml, just like articles.ent and books.ent to easily pull in the necessary entities. About this I have more ideas as I've been looking at the opportunities with XML. I already have something in a local repo, but it's highly wip. I think that doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/share/sgml should only contain some "glue" .ent files, for example imho newsgroups.ent should go into doc/share/sgml so that translators can use them in an early phase of the translation or simply reuse them if there is something to reuse. > BTW, for teams/hats related information, what do you think about > adding files including who it is on per developer basis? Or maybe we could for example merge 1995-1997 and 1999-2000 as 1995-2000? - There might be a website or comment element or attribute to put personal websites or additional info (e.g. we have at least 2 deceased committers) Regards, Gabor From gabor at kovesdan.org Mon Aug 18 20:49:25 2008 From: gabor at kovesdan.org (Gabor Kovesdan) Date: Mon Aug 18 20:49:37 2008 Subject: cvs commit: doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/committers-guide article.sgml doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/releng article.sgml doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/developers-handbook/policies chapter.sgml In-Reply-To: <20080818153942.GH1172@zaphod.nitro.dk> References: <200808162142.m7GLgaAQ086124@repoman.freebsd.org> <20080817.073048.238614512.hrs@allbsd.org> <48A75B1A.7060809@FreeBSD.org> <20080817.204750.78468138.hrs@allbsd.org> <20080818153942.GH1172@zaphod.nitro.dk> Message-ID: <48A9E040.7050104@kovesdan.org> Simon L. As for the diversity, I'm planning to work on doc to redesign it a bit using XML and newer DocBook and this will reduce the diversity. Of course, not completely as HTML and DocBook tags are quite different, but having everything in XML markup everything will be more uniform. Your point have sense, but personally I like the idea of having web in the language directories, because in this way the structure seems more consistent to me. You just enter the directory and you see the types of documentation, which could be currently: books, articles, web, slides, flyer. I also liked the way a single point of reference could be used to list all sorts of FreeBSD contributors. It is not only a matter of being able to remember only one URL, but also a social aspect of the Project that I heartily endorse and support. In a way, listing all the people who are contributors, committers, or part of any FreeBSD team in a *single* article is a good way of showing that we are all a part of "one, and the same team"---members of the same community. I always feel proud about this aspect of FreeBSD :) From keramida at ceid.upatras.gr Tue Aug 19 05:46:41 2008 From: keramida at ceid.upatras.gr (Giorgos Keramidas) Date: Tue Aug 19 05:46:47 2008 Subject: cvs commit: doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/committers-guide article.sgml doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/releng article.sgml doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/developers-handbook/policies chapter.sgml In-Reply-To: <48A9E040.7050104@kovesdan.org> (Gabor Kovesdan's message of "Mon, 18 Aug 2008 22:49:04 +0200") References: <200808162142.m7GLgaAQ086124@repoman.freebsd.org> <20080817.073048.238614512.hrs@allbsd.org> <48A75B1A.7060809@FreeBSD.org> <20080817.204750.78468138.hrs@allbsd.org> <20080818153942.GH1172@zaphod.nitro.dk> <48A9E040.7050104@kovesdan.org> Message-ID: <87d4k51rrd.fsf@kobe.laptop> On Mon, 18 Aug 2008 22:49:04 +0200, Gabor Kovesdan wrote: > Yes, SVN would be a nice idea! "Chinese Taipei" is definitely NOT the appropriate name for international affairs, it's just a ridiculous alternative when we are not be able to use "Taiwan". I've just pushed a bunch of stuff for network-servers/chapter.sgml and the bsdl-gpl article. This time I used the "rebase" extension of Hg as an experiment, to reduce the number of merge changesets visible online. It seems to have worked nicely: the age of commits in http://hg.hellug.gr/freebsd/doc-el/graph/586?revcount=100 goes back from 2 days ago, to 3 days ago, then 4 days ago, and then back to 2 days ago (two separate workspaces were used to work on the handbook and the article, so the commits were sort of 'parallel' but touched different places in the source). There are more fixes on the way - but I am also preparing a second patch for the en_US version - there is some more outdated info (core team elections, svn repository) - hopefully I'll finish this tomorrow. In the meantime you are welcome to review the changes so far and get back to me with any other fixes. I'll prepare a whitespace patch for this chapter when we are done with the content changes. Mention the growing use of FREEBSD-Xlist files for contrib software 5. Describe how vendor imports of Subversion code can be done (inspired by the Subversion docs of the Wiki). 6.
