A) Past bad examples are never a good reason for making new mistakes, 
which is why
B) I specified new ports in my question

Has this happened in practice, if so how often? If not, how often do you 
think it might happen in the future? My personal preference would be to 
follow the guidelines generally, and deal with exceptions as needed, but 
I'm certainly willing to listen to reasons why this is a bad idea. :)
