Here's what I meant by the above:

There's a bug in version 4.12 that we currently have that manifests
itself as follows:

# tail -1 magic
0       string  FOO                     FOO
# echo FOO | file -
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Could you, as a maintainer, consider upgrading our file(1) to the
latest version 4.16, where this problem seems to have been fixed?
