I don't think so...this isn't the attitude we should take when a
change has unintended consequences for third parties.

On general grounds I'd prefer to limit the non-alphanumeric characters
that appear in port metadata (particularly data that ends up in things
like INDEX) [1]. I'd still like you to rename it.
