This used to work with GCC -- which ran 'configure' and then 'make'.
Newer GCC's top-level 'configure' isn't the GNU autoconf. Instead, the
GNU autoconf is done in the 'make' stage. I need to do some whacking on
the FSF GCC sources to DTRT.
