I also have an Acer Altos 9100B, and I had similar problems,
using 2.4.17 with new Adaptec AIC-7xxx driver compiled in the
kernel. Altos 9100B also has two Adaptec AIC-7899 on board, and
a backplane which carries drive bays. I'm using both controllers,
with backplane in split mode, with one SCSI-160 (what a waste! :( )
on the 1st, and one on the 2nd channel.

My problem was in locking during kernel boot-up, more precisely
during detection of SCSI devices. After a while, I realized that
the problem is in Tagged Queue Depth, which is initially set to
253. So, I tried to set it to 16 during kernel configuration,
recompiled the kernel, and it works perfectly since then. I think
that Queue Depth can be set also by kernel parameters, but I can't
remember that now. Sure, Queue Depth is tightly related to HDD's,
so here are they: 9.1GB IBH UltraStar and 18GB Quantum Atlas IV,
both SCSI-160.

BTW: Which motherboard is in Altos 600 ? Is it dual-cpu capable ?
In Acer Altos 9100B, motherboard is M9LD, claimed to be dual-capable,
but it simply doesn't work with 2 identical P-III 700MHz - works
great only with one CPU... :( Anybody have info about that ??

Hope this helps ;)
