The OEM almost always has to gen their own BIOS.  This is due to the
10s of different configurations you can use for things like non-volatile
setting storage, termination, bus configurations, etc.  Adaptec makes
this a cookbook process though.

Did you ever verify that FreeBSD would not boot on these machines?
CAM has been incorperated into the -current source tree, so you
should steal a boot floppy from
ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD/3.0BETA-LATESTDATE/floppies/

or something like that.
