Thanks for your hint, I got my Linux up and running with 
Felix's boot disk too. Now I am trying to patch the source
code and re-compile the kernel.  : )
BTW, what's the different between 
	aic7xxx-5.1.0-pre6-2.0.35.patch.gz
	aic7xxx-5.1.0-pre7-2.0.35.patch.gz
	aic7xxx-5.1.0-pre8-2.0.35.patch.gz
are they all from Doug?

About your problem, it bother me too. But I found a work
around. 
You said "I was able to mount the SCSI-disk from my older IDE-drive."
The problem is your IDE drive, Linux think it is the first disk.
If you want to boot from /dev/sda, than first unplug the IDE cable
from your IDE HDD (disable them under BIOS will NOT do this trick).
Re run lilo, it should not have the problem again.
