Adaptec 2940C AIC 7xxx driver issue

Hi. I've been using Linux for sometime and now have kernel rev
2.0.34. I just bought an Adaptec 2920C PCI scsi controller, and
an HP SCSI DAT drive (5000i).

I'm having trouble getting Linux to recognise the card and/or
the tape drive.

First off, I saw the comment in the SCSI drivers that say that
the 2920 is not covered by the AIC 7xxx drivers; however, I tried
future domain, and that driver doesn't recognise the card
either. On the other hand, /proc/pci gives me:

PCI devices found:
  Bus 0, device 19, function 0:
SCSI storage controller: Adaptec AIC-7850 (rev 3).
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. IRQ 11. Master Capable. No bursts. Min Gnt=4.Max Lat=4.
      I/O at 0x1400.
      Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xc4000000.

And, upon further checking, the 7850 is one of the controllers supported
by the AIC driver, according to the documentation.

When booting with the AIC 7xxx driver in place, Linux sees the
card alright, but hangs in an (infinite) loop trying to probe
a nonexistent unit on channel 0. My HP drive is set on channel
3.

help... :)
