OK, last message of the day, I promise. Changing FASTMODE to FAILDIS
did indeed get the driver much further than ever before. I now get a
scsi timeout, though, and still crash. I haven't got the energy to
debug further (and need to go home an hour ago) but I'll append the
key part of the current crash message in case Doug or anybody else
recognizes it as a more prosaic problem. Otherwise, I'll be in
tomorrow trying to figure out why it is timing out...

After the DEVCONFIG value line (as before) I now get:

scsi0: Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 5.1.0pre4/3.2.4
       <Adaptec AIC-7890/1 Ultra2 SCSI host adapter>
scsi1: Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 5.1.0pre4/3.2.4
       <Adaptec AIC-7860 Ultra SCSI host adapter>
scsi : 2 hosts
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 1, scsi0, channel 0, id

aic7xxx driver version 5.1.0pre4/2.0.34

Timed out command is scb #29:

Hope this helps.
