Trouble with AIC7xxx driver with Linux 2.0.32

Greetings,
  I'm currently trying to install RedHat 4.2 (Linux 2.0.32) on a machine
that has 2 Adaptec 2940 SCSI controllers, the second of which has no
devices attached to it.

  After the installation program loads the AIC7xxx driver module, it
attempts to scan the SCSI busses. It successfully scans the first card,
but when it attempts to scan the second card is oops'es with a 
protection fault: 0000, then times out on the bus, tries again, times
out again, tries again, etc.

  Is there any way to:
     * Fix this entirely
     * Tell the driver to only scan for one host adapter
     * Tell the driver to stop retying
     * Anything else that might help?
