2.0.35-pre6 on PC164 Alpha with 2940 ?

Did anyone succeed in using 2.0.35-pre6 on an alpha machine (PC164)
with a 2940 UW controller ? It just locks up after booting. 
No error message. Before I'm going to dig into this I'd like to
know if these patches should work at all on alpha machines.
