Linux 2.1.97

My apologies in advance for asking a question that has probably been
asked before.

I'm unable to get Linux 2.1.97 to recognize my two AIC-7870 onboard
controllers.
Is there a patch I am missing?
They work fine under 2.0.32, but I need to upgrade the kernel to
get lockd for NFS (go figure).

Sorry if this is a no-brainer, but I'm pretty stumped and can't
find anything on this.
