Pro's/Con's of motherboard SCSI controllers?

AIC List folk,

Does anyone have strong pro/con sentiments about the AIC controllers that
are built into some new Pentium II motherboards?  The combo motherboards
are substantially less expensive than a standard motherboard plus a
separate 2940UW PCI controller board.  Does one lose any significant
functionality (speed, buffering, whatever) with the on-board controllers?

In addition to your own opinions, I'd appreciate pointers to good on-line
technical writeups, if you happen to know of any.
