Patching a dependency

I maintain the security/barnyard port.  I'm working on a new port, 
security/sguil-server.  The upcoming version makes some major changes, that 
include the need to patch barnyard.

Is there a way, within one port, to patch a dependent application, 
regardless of whether or not it's already installed?  If so, how?
